Your business plan is the route map that defines your goals, explains your strategy and gives real direction to the everyday running of the company.

So what should you include in your plan?

5 key elements to include in your business plan

To create a truly robust and meaningful plan:

  • Outline your vision – explain WHY you’re in business and how you intend to add value for customers. For example ‘We promote a healthy lifestyle through organic produce’.
  • Set out your goals – outline your personal goals as a founder, and your wider strategic goals for the business. Then explain how these key goals are aligned. If your aim is to exit in 10 years, build this into your long-term plan.
  • Define your funding and budget – to start trading, you need finance, so outline the investment that’s needed and how you’ll access that funding. Then break down this initial investment pot into clear budgets for each operational area.
  • Forecast sales and cashflow – define the profit number you need, then calculate the volume of sales needed to deliver that income – and give a clear breakdown of the cash inflows and outflows needed to achieve positive cashflow.
  • Set your timelines for success – set key milestones and give the business some concrete deadlines for meeting the goals, sales and revenues that you’ve projected.

Employment Contracts

Employment Contracts are an important part of running your business. They can include wages and conditions for employees not covered by a federal or state award or agreement.

As a minimum a written Employment Contract should contain:

  • Job title and classification
  • Employment status, ie part-time, casual
  • Working days and hours
  • Rate of pay and any allowances payable
  • Probationary period, if applicable

The contract could also include duties required of the employee plus policies and procedures that the employee is expected to follow.

Do I need a Business Name?


A business name must be registered if you are conducting business under a name other than your own personal name or if you do not have a Pty Ltd Company. If you are a sole trader and are running your business under your exact name, you don’t need to register. However, be aware that there is no protection for your personal assets if a customer makes a legal claim.

A Pty Ltd company registration will protect your personal assets from most claims. Provided you are not fraudulent, grossly negligent or similar, any claim is limited to the assets of the company and they cannot make a claim against your personal assets. This is the best protection for your home and family. Consider starting out your business with a Pty Ltd set up right from the start.

You need to own your own business name – this is crucial.

To ensure the name you choose is available:

  • Do a search on IP Australia for your name first. It may be registered to someone else for a similar business. If you’re really attached to that name and you don’t want to let it go, you can consider a variation in the spelling to make it memorable and more unique.
  • Check the domain name is available or a variation for your business plus the derivative versions (.com, .org, .net etc) on or a similar domain registration service.
  • Check the ASIC website to see if your name is available.
  • Don’t forget to check the social media platforms. You can use an online tool like com to help you.

You need to be happy with your name so ensure you take the time to research, name and brand your business properly as it can be a very expensive process to rebrand at a later date. Smart new business owners will also consider trademarking their business name at this early stage. That way you will own the rights to the brand.

Make your Business Stand Out

If you want your business to stand out, you need to ask yourself what truly makes you different from your competition. Understanding what your ideal client really wants and making sure you deliver it better than anyone else.

Write down all the positive aspects of your business, such as good service, quality products, reasonably priced.  Also list the benefits your business could bring to customers.  These could be things like family friendly, free delivery, after-hours service, fast turnaround time, locally produced, convenient location.  Make sure that the benefits you list are things you can achieve and deliver.

Check out your competition.  If a competitor is offering one or more of the benefits that you have written down, cross it off the list.  Narrow down your list until you find a benefit that is truly exclusive.

It’s not always easy to come up with a new concept.  So take your time, look closely at your business and think about:

  • what it is you really want to offer
  • who you want to target
  • why you want people to come to you
  • how you propose to help them

Here are some methods you can think of using:

Narrow your target market– One way to be different in your marketplace is to have a very specific target market. By specializing in a specific customer niche, you can focus on the skills or services that uniquely benefit that customer.

Narrow your offering– Another way to differentiate your business is to narrow your offerings. This can be extremely effective as you become known for a specific skill.

Become an expert in your field – Build a reputation as the expert in your field through your blog posts, books, videos, training and other information products. People who truly have a problem to solve will want to work with the expert.

Solve a problem– Find out what common problems your clients have and be the best at solving them. Make your solutions turnkey so you can solve their problems faster and with better results.

 Focus on Customer Service– Aim to create the best experience for your customers. From your initial proposal through final delivery of your product or service, be sure your customers are treated as if they were the only one you have.

 Make it easy to do business with you–Provide access to you via text or email 24×7. Simplify your contract or instead, use an engagement letter. Do whatever it takes to make working with you easy and convenient.

Finally ready for launch

Finally the day has comes ready for launch.  One month and three days into the building. Not bad really since this is the first WordPress website I have built.  There are still some things I would like to change, however for the time been it is functional.

This is really the issue with start up a businesses.  The launch time, the amount of set up time and the “when am I ready”.  I was talking to someone the other day and they said they started 18 months ago, found their supplier, designed their product but are yet to start their online store.  I asked them if they are having an physical store… no only online.  Really 18 months is a long time for setup, 6 months is a long time for set up.  How do people get into this position, months or years later and no sale?

Lack of a plan, no defined time frames.  Even when things drag out and didn’t happen, they didn’t stop, rethink and plan it to happen better.

8 Reasons You Need a Business Coach

Slowly coming together

Slowly coming together is not typically a phrase most entrepreneurs or even business owners for that matter want to hear. So why is my new business slowly coming together?

A few reasons but the main reason is the time. The lack of time I have to put aside to build my business. Having time or making time is a critical component of building a business. One of the first questions you should ask yourself, is HOW MUCH TIME are you willing to commit to working ON your business?

Building a business is time consuming, there is many wrong choices, many moments of hesitation and many more moments of staring at the screen and thinking WHAT?

For a new business to get off the ground in this digital world, you need to have domain name, a business name, an ABN, a website, a facebook page, social media, online systems, an online calendar, so many different things to get sorted and to do.

Oh how good would it be to have a guide!

Been the fourth business I have setup in the past ten years has opened my eyes to the lack of help and assistance available to new businesses.

Following your dreams isn’t always as simple as it sounds.  Your dreams are that.. they are dreams and not reality.  Sometimes the things we want, seem so far from our reach, we can not even estimate the time it will take to achieve our dreams.

So that is where they stay.  So far in our future. So far from our reach. And as the years slip away, our dreams become a memory.  I remember when I was little, I want to be…….

First blog post

This is my very first blog post.  Not just the very first blog post on this page, but the very first blog post EVER.  Where to begin?


I’m going to begin with the why?  Why am I doing this?  Why am I starting a business?  Why am I throwing away my well paying job.

It’s simple.  I hate 9-5.  Years and Years and Years of nine to five.  My children have grown up, I have missed the school assembly’s, I have missed the 3pm pick up at drop zone, I have missed reading to them in the morning, and my children have been in care 8-6pm all their childhood.  Sure they seem happy, sure I earn to provide them a beautiful home and private schooling, however there is just one thing missing.

I miss them.  That’s my why?  Flexible hours and 3pm school pick ups.
